In a meeting on 19 November 2020 the Kotka environmental committee granted a building permit for the event centre and the new campus building planned for the City Port area in Kotkansaari. The event centre building permit was issued to Backstaff Oy, the constructor of the venue. The event centre is a joint venture between Backstaff Oy and ALA Architects, and in August a team of consultants from Ramboll CM Oy joined the squad.
“The development plans for the City Port area have been systematically honed for many years, and the cooperation is now bearing fruit. It is extremely gratifying for the city of Kotka that the new university campus will be located in the City Port together with the event centre. This will promote Kotka’s attraction not only in the eyes of students, but also in terms of business opportunities in the event industry. The collaborative effort behind the construction projects makes Kotka a vibrant and inviting place to live and work in”, commends Jari Elomaa, Chair of the Kotka City Council.
“Now that we have a building permit, we can take the project further as planned. The actual building of the venue will start early in the spring of 2021, and it is expected to be completed by the spring of 2023. The first events can be hosted at the latest in the summer of 2023”, says Project Manager Aleksi Sallinen of Backstaff Oy.
